FIREMAN ROB

Age: 37
Home: Waunakee, WI

Background:
Rob Verhelst (aka Fireman Rob) was 23 when he spent eight days at ground zero. He spent those days working Search, Rescue and Recovery at the World Trade Center. It obviously was a life-changing experience. To remember the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, Verhelst raced at the 10th anniversary of the event and raised money for Code 3 for a Cure Foundation at Ironman Wisconsin, which ironically took place on September 11th, 2011. During the race he wore his complete firefighting gear for the run portion of the race. His efforts managed to raise over $8,000 for the charity.

In 2012 Verhelst ramped up his Ironman racing and fundraising activities. He completed six full-distance Ironman events along with three other full-distance races. Each marathon was completed with the full firefighter’s gear, all 50 pounds of it - even in Hawaii’s oppressive heat.

To date, he's completed 15 Ironman distance and 7 Half Ironman distance triathlons in full firefighter gear.
